Title Operation smoke out
Creator Turner, Kyle M.
Subject Smoking; Prevention
Description Introduction: The purpose of this ISP was to promote smoking cessation and prevention through education to both pharmacy professionals and the community in conjunction with the Utah Tobacco Prevention Task Force and the Utah Dept. of Health. Individual goals within the project included providing education and resources for smoking cessation by tabling at 4-5 community health fairs to current smokers and their family members and provide pharmacists with smoking cessation resources and education which they will use for the benefit and counseling of their patients. We also created a survey of current smoking cessation practices among pharmacists in Utah. Procedures: In order to accomplish our goals we tabled at the University of Utah's Welcome Back event, the Utah Senior Expo, the Be Well Utah fair sponsored by University of Utah Healthcare, and the Midvale Hispanic Health Fair. We gave a didactic lecture to first year pharmacy students, distributed quitting resources to local pharmacies, and created the pharmacist survey of cessation practices. Results: The results of these efforts will be seen in the lives of those who have chosen to quit and their families. The results will also be seen for years in the lives of the patients that pharmacy professionals engage is quitting. Reflection: This project has ignited in me a passion for service in my profession and community. I will use the lessons learned through my ISP throughout my career to help others both in and out of pharmacy.
