Description Mining town of Bingham showing the Yampa Smelter and the Copperton Mill as well as the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad track line. Gold, silver, lead, and then copper were mined in Bingham. General Patrick Conner's men from Fort Douglas actually staked the first claim in the canyon. At its peak, Bingham was seven miles long but less than a city block wide. The town was unincorporated in 1971 and demolished to make way for further mining development.
