Description Life on K Ranch from the Vernal Express September 1, 1948-the K Ranch, so called from the cattle brand, came into existence officially in 1898 when Charles Popper of New York received a deed from the government on slightly more than 75 acres. He lived on the land since 1880. He not only raised cattle by bred horses and maintained a race trac to train the horses he sold. The K Ranch was the only place between Jensen and Elk Springs, Colorado where there was hay. It consequently became a stop over for those who were traveling through. Thomas Morgan was driving cattle from Steamboat when he first stopped at the ranch. He bought the place from Mr. Popper and moved his wife and two children there in 1908. He and his son, Pierre, later became partners with a start of only 15 head of cattle. They enlarged the ranch to 2500 acres and large herds of sheep and cattle. The ranch continued to be a rest haven for travelers and when automobiles came into existence the Morgans kept gasoline there...The present home on the ranch was build by Pierre and his wife, Hilda Snow Sorensen, in 1940.
