Show The Salt Lake Tribune, Tuesday, July 2, 1963 Need 2,291 Acres Withdrawal of 2,291 acres of public domain to establish a missile reentry and launch facility in Grand County and recreation facilities in Daggett County was announced Monday by R. D. Nielson, Utah director, U.S. Bureau of Land Management. A PARCEL OF 672 acres in Sees, 1, 12 and 32, T.2N., R. 19E; Sec. 4, T.2N., R.20E; Sees, 3, 9, 13, 16, 24 and 29 T.2N., R.22E., and Sees. 8 and 15 T.2N., R.23E., all within Ashley National Forest in the vicinity of Flaming Gorge Reservoir, will be used for campgrounds, pic- | nic grounds, observation points | and parking lots. THE 1,619 ACRES in Sees.j 13, 14, 22, 23 and 24; T. 21S.;; R.16E.; Sees. 19, 29, 30 and 31; T.21S., R.17E., will be used .for construction and operation of a ballistic missile reentry and launching facility about five miles southeast of Green River, Emery County. I WITHBRAWAL of the land in Daggett County will not prevent mineral leasing and will be subject to valid existing rights, said Mr. Nielson. Clyde considered adequate Monday the precautions planned for the U.S. Army's missile firing series near Green River in Emery County, THE GOVERNOR and several state department heads' heard an Army presentation on the program in Gov. Clyde's; Capitol office. After seeing a film showing and hearing explanations, Gov. Clyde said: "THE ARMY has been thorough in its description of the proposed project.. "It coincided with reports wej have read in" newspapers; we find the danger minimal and the precautions adequate." MAJ. GEN. John -F. Thorlin, commanding officer at White Sands Missile Range, N.M., headed the delegation conferring with state officials. He said the missile firing *"|is expected to start, in October. fi THE TEST shots will go from: the. Green River site to a White Sands target 500 miles away, he said. Tested will be models of the Athena four-stage ground-to-ground missile. Dummy warheads will be used, Gen. Thor-lin said, and tests are designed to study "re-entry" factors. HE SAID firings would be lew at. first and amount to "about one every 12 days after the installation goes into full operation."
