Description |
Duane's syndrome is a congenital ocular motility disorder characterized by weak abduction, and retraction of the globe in attempted adduction. Autopsy studies show absence of abducens motoneurons, causing abduction weakness. Aberrant innervation of the lateral rectus muscle by oculomotor rierve fibers normally innervating medial rectus, causes co-contraction With retraction of the globe into the orbit on attempted adduction. Questions persist as to whether Duane's has a developmental or genetic basis, and whether the etiologic insult can occur peripherally or centrally. This study offers answers to both questions. |
