Subject Information Technology
Description Wireless Update by Dave Huth Campus Wireless Challenges: A frequency allocation plan needs to be developed for the University. It is not a good idea to proliferate critical applications on the 2.4 GHz frequency, nor the 5.8 GHz frequency. If critical apps reside in these default spaces, they will be competing for quality of service. There is not a lot of frequency to allocate; this will go to the Wireless Committee for a recommendation. Also, areas of coverage overlap presents a design challenge - users will bounce back and forth between common SSIDs across different wireless administrative domains resulting in a bad user experience. This and other technical issues will face us immediately as more outdoor wireless is planned. Finally, and perhaps most challenging to draft, is positioning for persistent connections. The Wireless group is currently working on this recommendation. Secure and Insecure wireless networks will be phased out being replaced by uconnect and hotspot. Both Secure and Insecure will stay around until the new networks are fully in place and users have been adequately educated on using the new SSID(s). Uconnect requires a more robust encryption and not all areas of Campus are ready to support this network. Hotspot requires MPLS across the Campus Network before it can be deployed. Guest uNID services will still be available to allow guests to get on the encrypted network.
