Description The etiology of the inflammatory process in giant cell arteritis (GCA) is unknown. Prior studies of herpes zoster antigen and GCA have conflicting results ranging from 74% with zoster antigen in one study to none with zoster antigen in a second study. Therefore, we re-examined whether zoster viral antigen was detectable in temporal artery (TA) biopsies taken from individuals with GCA.
