Description |
Color portrait photograph of Helen Thomas. This handsome young Navajo woman, wealthy by Navajo standards, has chosen to remain single. Most Navajo girls of her age, about twenty-two, would have become mothers of several children. Helen declares that no man is going to live off her sheep. Her beautiful jewelry serves as a safe investment of surplus income. She speaks no English and received the name, Helen Thomas, from a census enumerator who could not learn her real name." She is sitting with her hands in her lap. She has lots of silver and turquoise jewelry, coins adorning her velvet shirt, and a poncho (blanket) draped over her shoulder" |
