Title The social problems of the Chinese in Salt Lake County
Date 1973
Description Twenty one Chinese households were selected from the Salt Lake City Telephone Directory. Data was Collected through personal interviews, using an interview questionnaire designed by the investigator. The average Chinese household is larger than the average household in the State of Utah and of the nation. The Chinese families studied show a normal distribution of sex, age, and marital status. Approximately half of the subjects are immigrants. One half of these immigrants have only a grade school education. Among the first generation Chinese the school age children and working adults have serous language difficulties in school and employment. One half of the full-time employed earn less than $450 a month. There is a generation gap between the foreign-born parents and the American-born children. Their major barriers are language, cultural and social values. The majority of the subjects feel no discrimination and prejudice against them. The major problems confronting the Chinese are language and cultural barriers, the Chinese were not and are as yet, unable to utilize the social services available in the community. There are little or no services available to help the Chinese solve their particular problems. English classes were recommended for school age children and adults to help alleviate serious communication problems. Vocational Training for the semi-skilled and unskilled in the low-income working force will improve general economic standing. Further research on English proficiency, aptitude and interest of the population will provide valuable data to clarify the individual needs of the Chinese population.
