Abstract Three micronized coals, that is, relatively finer-ground coals (mass mean diameter 7 - 8.5 microns) than conventional pulverized coals (44 - 54 microns) were evaluated as an alternative fuel in boilers designed for oil or gas. The investigations included fuel characterization tests and tests in the Babcock & Wilcox 200,000 Btu/hr combustor, which is designed to produce fly ash with properties similar to ash from an industrial or utility steam generator. Tests to compare the behavior of micronized coals with that of pulverized coals were conducted and showed that: - Combustion performance of micronized coal was superior to pulverized coal; ignition and burnout temperatures were lower. - In cold flow t~sts of micronized coal through the test burner, there were no signs of agglomeration. - Deposition rates of ash on ceramic probes exposed to the combustiongases were lower during micronized-coal tests. - Fly ash from micronized coal had a finer particle size distribution. - The strength of the sintered fly ash (a measure of sootblower effectiveness to remove the ash deposits in superheater tube banks) was greater from micronized coal. The sintering results usually used to evaluate fouling potential cannot be directly applied in this case, because ash buildup rates are significantly different.
