Show This is a black and white studio portrait of Hannah Claire Haines in her later years. She is wearing dark rimmed glasses with the top part of the rim being thicker than the bottom. She has her head slightly tilted to her left side. Hannah is adorned with dark earrings, a sparsely beaded necklace, and is wearing a twin-set sweater. Her gray hair is very short and curly. The back drop has a gray gradient and the overall image has good shadows and highlights that do not overpower Hannah but are distinct. The pose focuses on Hannah's face and her right shoulder, which includes a part of her necklace and sweater, while the rest of the image is out of focus.

Hannah Claire Haines spent four years as a nurse before deciding to become an accountant, which at the time was something unheard of for a woman. She took courses at the University of Utah and the Walton School of Commerce in Chicago, and was the only woman of her class to pass the CPA exam in 1932. Later she was known as the first woman CPA in Utah, and would continue flourishing in the field well into the 1960s. She was a prominent member of the American Woman's Society of Certified Public Accountants, American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, Utah Association of Certified Public Accountants, National Association of Bank Auditors and Controllers, and the Business and Professional Women's Club. She contributed to Westminster College's Malouf building for its nursing program and supported many students with scholarships.

|
Further Information |
In the top right corner of the photograph is a crease, and in the right light several scratches can be seen. Written in the scrapbook and beneath the portrait in blue marker is, "Hannah Claire Haines; July 15 1891; Nov. 12 1974." On the back of the photograph several phrases are written. At the top is marked in red pen, "1 3/4 x 2," and stamped beneath this at an angle and in red is, "SUNDAY SOCIETY." Stamped in the center of the photograph in blue is, "LIGNELL & GILL; PHOTOGRAPHERS; 22 North State; Salt Lake City, Utah." Over the company's stamp was a paper form attached, which states the following in type, "This is a photograph of - Name…Miss H. Clair Haines; Address…[blank]; City…[blank]; To be returned to…Emma Beck; Address…627-2nd Ave. S.L. City." The form has another section for information, but nothing was filled out, and stamped over all of it in red is, "SUNDAY SOCIETY." Written on this form at the top in what appears to be blue marker is, "1/2 x 1 1/2." On the back of the photograph, above Lignell and Gill's blue stamp, is written in cursive and in pencil, "H. Claire Haines; 1963." Other notes in pencil can be found on the back of the photograph; there is scribbled in pencil on the top right corner, "R25;" on the bottom right corner the numbers 43.6, which is underlined; and looking towards the bottom and centered the number 3. The original photograph is located in the Hannah Claire Haines Scrapbook in the Giovale Library Archives. |
