Miss Hartwell, living in Fukien has carried on the work begun by her parents over sixty years ago, establishing the orphanage, and an agricultural school, and girls' Industrial School, the cost of which has been tens of thousands of dollars. She has twice collected funds for the relief of sufferers, helping many thousand people. She has devoted herself to philanthropy so she may be called gracious and loyal." Following the seven years of support of the orphanage by the Christian Herald, the Fukien Government and Chinese philanthropy have carried on the good work. In 1921 Miss Hartwell came home on furlough and her great plea for China was for Industrial Education. The Christian Herald, realizing the need, organized in 1922, the Christian Herald Industrial Missions in China at Foochow, with a Governing Board of Chinese and Americans. Third Period-1925-1934 This period does not show the marked advancement of the previous ones. For two thousand years China has revered book learning, and "white collar jobs" that lead to self-support are considered superior to farming, gardening, poultry and pig raising.
