Manypenny Commissioner of Indian Affairs Washington City D.C. Sir The mail from Independence brought to hand on the 10th inst. Communications from you of which I note the following dates, Oct. 16, Nov. 21, Dec. 27, 1855, and Feby 8 & 11 1856. I observe fcom your note of October 16, that you have not received Dr. Garland Hurt's letter of the 27th of August last, nor copy of treaty made with the Indians on the Humboldt, both of which were forwarded by the Sept. mail, as stated in my letter of 31st August. The receipt of the those papers still remain unacknowledged by the Department, we will therefore forward copies again by the June Mail which leaves on the first proximo. Your favor of the 8th Feby. is in relation to Capote Indians, which is accompanied by a translation of a letter from the Abigine Agency^dated the 29th of Nov. 1855, in which it is charged as follows: "That during the past summer months a Company of Mormons had settled in their Country, built homes, and taken possession of their lands which they had occupied for many years, and the same had been set apart to them by the Government in the treaty of peace, and that they (the Indians) in order to check |
