Description This project is a study of the woodfired ceramic process. It is a personal journey that brought me back to the potters wheel in search of forms that could best respond to the effects of the flame and ash. A desire to recreate the elements typical in extended multiple day fires led me to find methods of manipulating the surfaces of the clay with foreign materials. Creating such surfaces led me to choose platter forms, mostly unglazed, and a series of medium to large oval vessel forms, with a combination of glazed and unglazed surfaces. The result is a fusion of what is historically the longest and most enduring method of firing with contemporary forms that no longer fit the constraints of their functional backgrounds. Soft, altered forms with warm earth tone clays, slips, and glazes offer a visual statement that brings art and craft together.
