Description Neurotrophins are a family of growth factors critical for the survival and differentiation of neuronal cell populations. The neurotrophins brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and neurotrophin-3 (NT-3) are hypothesized to play an important role in eye development due to their expression in the adult neuroretina, their regulation in response to retinal and optic nerve injury, and the effect of altered neurotrophin signaling on retinal development.
