Eighth Grade Graduation. Identified in the photo are standing: Mr Robinson. Front Row Unidentified, Zina Batty, Charles Pope, Unidentified, Vilate Batty, Unidentified, Unidentified, Amber Timothy. Second Row: all undentified until the last young man who is Lysle Hadlock. Third Row- Fern Holdaway is the first girl and the others are unidentified. The fourth row is all unidentified. Note from Celestia B. Rasmussen who is a sister of Vilate and Zina Batty. This was the highest degree in education offered in Vernal at the thime. The Uintah Academy was a small frame building used for various public gatherings. The girls were all dressed in a similar manner. White ribbons in the hair and on the diplomas. The boys wore boutineers. The girls wore high-topped, probably buttoned boots. Lace shoes came as a later fashion. "I recall some things about the time when my sisters belonged to this elite group. One song they sang was, "He is gone but we will all miss him." It was at this time Walter Woolley injured his leg with a pocket knife and it later had to be removed. |
