Abstract Occidental Petroleum Corporation is developing coal-water mixture (CWM) as a means for conversion of oil-burning equipment to coal. Although the handling and storage characteristics of CWM are similar to residual fuel oil, preliminary research has shown its combustion characteristics are quite different. Thus a CWM formula must be optimal in terms of both rheological and combustion qualities to be a viable fuel. Subscale combustion tests were performed by KVB to determine the effect of CWM compositional variables and firing parameters on atomization quality and combustion performance. CWM compositional variables examined included coal type, coal loading, particle size distribution and stabilizing additives. Operational parameters included furnace heat release rate, furnace excess oxygen, and atomization quality. Flame stability, combustion efficiency, particulates, SO-, and NO were evaluated. These data were used to establish a CWM specification and guidelines for commercial use.
