Description Cysticercosis may effect the optic nerve through a variety of mechanisms. Most often it causes papilledema due to obstructive hydrocephalus. However, cysts in the optic nerve as well as compressive or infiltrative optic neuropathy have also been described. The term perioptic neuritis refers to an inflammatory condition predominately involving the optic nerve sheaths.
