Show APPENDIX,-FOR SPECIAL FRIENDS Starving Millions. Famine is rampant again in parts of Shantung and Chihli Provinces. I quote a part of a letter received from a Chinese friend, retaining his idiom and spelling: "The prospect of the fammers (farmers) is very mourning. They have a hard time because they didn't got any rain for their harvest, and the fighters have thieved what supplies they had. Many are going to be beggars. I am sorry for them, but I have no way to prolong them". This is an immediate need-and some will wish to help in the relief of famine, much of which aid is taking the form of prevention of disease and treatment of the sick. How to Invest. Bank drafts and checks are the best and easiest way to send money, made out to the order of one of us. Also, if desired, (though it causes delay) money may be remitted to the American Board, and in that case it should bear a label reading, "For the use of Drs. F. F. & E. B. Tucker" and stating whether for maintenance of medical work or famine use. One dollar will "grubstake" a famine family of five for five days, and, as an average, the same amount will care for the drugs for five sick people for five days. Hospital costs come to 50 cents a day, which the poor can never pay, and yet we never turn any away. Mr. and Mrs. Ellis, splendid aids for four j-ears, are at Nampa, Idaho for a time, and do not return to the hospital position, though urged to go back later in another capacity. Some givers to their work,-and the Hospital is indeed grateful to them,-may wish to assist through us till they return. Station ANIHC. Radio development has proved that space may be full of voices and messages. Are not some of them for us, if we tune in on Station ANIHC? War and anti-foreign feeling (increasingly rare) is the static, but it will never drown out God's plan for one-fourth of the humans of the world. We are doubtless soon starting on another "world flight". Though there will be detours, we are pretty sure to arrive where there's need. Even if you don't get this letter, we hope for a line of reply, as the Irishman said. We "choose to run", for we seem already elected, and your prayerful cooperation will help greatly. EMMA B. AND FRANCIS F. TUCKER, 120 E. College St., Oberlin, O. "I like the man who faces tvhat he musi With ship triumphant, and a heart of cheer; Who fights the daily battle without fear, Sees his hopes fail, yet keeps unfaltering trust That God is God . . . . . . envies not, Nor loses faith in man; but does his best Nor ever murmurs at his humbler lot, But with a smile mid words of hope gives zest To every toiler." |
