Show THE WHITE SANDS MISSILE RANGER - 15 Sep ?2 Monday firings open fall Pershing series Two Pershing missiles will be fired from Utah to New Mexico Monday morning to open the eight-round fall series of off-range firings. The two-stage artillery ballistic missiles will be launched at Green River by elements of the Federal Republic of Germany Air Force. They will be programmed to impact on White Sands Missile Range. Preparations for the series began in August. It is scheduled to run through October, with four rounds to be fired by West German units, three by elements of the Europe-based Seventh U.S. Army, and the final round to be fired by a battery of the 3rd Battalion, 9th Field Artillery, Fifth U.S. Army from Ft. Sill, Okla. Technical and administrative support for all of the firings will be provided by the 3rd Battalion. Also providing support will be White Sands Missile Range organizations using U.S. Army TECOM (Test and Evaluation Command) test concepts, the Pershing Project Manager's Office of the U.S. Army Missile Command at Redstone Arsenal, Ala,, and the U.S. Army Field Artillery Missile Systems Evaluation Group from Ft. Sill. Representatives of the Martin Marietta Corp. of Orlando, Fla., prime contractor for Pershing missiles, will be on hand. Army officials have announced that the safety area between Green River and Deadhorse Point State Park in Utah will be evacuated at 6 a.m. for Monday's firing missions. The missions also will require blocks on secondary roads between Green River and Deadhorse Point State Park, beginning at 7:30 a.m. The blocks will be set on the Crystal Geyser, Floy Wash and Dubinky Well roads and on the Deadhorse Point Access Road at two places - one near a landmark known as The Knoll, the other at a spot about seven miles west of U.S. Highway 160-163. (AP) - Two more Pershing ballistic missiles were fired from Green River, Utah, to White Sands Tuesday by troops of the West German Air Force, the base reported. The first two firings, also by West German troops, were Sept. 18. Next month, U.S. troops are to fire the final four missiles. Three will be launched by units of the 7th U.S. Army from Europe, and one will be fired by a missile battery from Ft. Sill, Okla. Green River is a frequent launch: site for White Sands missile tests. An area down-range from the site is evacuated of residents, and some roads are blocked. |
