Show SHENOBE ---After Sevvitoots andhad exhausted the subject and had seemingly come to its finality Joe still stood fixed and looking intently at the enlargement on the wall asfinished my last note and was about to walk away Joe said Beckwith you had this long timestudy itbutbetshow you thing You never saw All vight What is it Joe He tookstep closer put his finger on this nearly eroded face seen In the upper left corner of the large photograph with its sweeping wisp of hair high noble forehead strong nose forceful mouth full beard worn only by the privileged and said inlow intense reverent tone Shenobe Shenobe do it Cut story on rocks himself Everything told on rocks everything that happen to Indian Look close Maybe somewhere find him Shenobe wrote it Joesincerity overpowered me was non-plussed Knew what Weenoonse-a-pope wasJoe had shown me another Indian from Ibapah had shown me and explained Oon-i-pits prank-write on the rocks at Utah Lake Joe had instructed me in Moki-chi-pope and led me into the superstition of Toquob-a-pope once before he had shown me Shenobe-a-pope ofdifferent kind it beingdendrite that Shenobe had MADE but little diddream that Shenobe himselt ever set hand to rock and thus was the author ofrecord of this nature inpetroglyph was learning something And that learning was most interesting From Joebrother Ted was later to get another instance ofgroup of glyphs made by Shenobea very entertaining storythe product of the great culture-hero of the Utesbut that not signed by the author as is this one Here is the portrait done in stone of the author an attested production -the group signed withself-portrait Thanks Joe It iswonderful addition and addstouch of inestimable value share your feeling Digital image 2003 Beckwith Family Al rights reserved |
