Show Literal retran slat ion f rom the Navajo Last Gospel : "And the One that was the Word became a five finger one, and with us ex isting He became."- St. John 1 :14. What Is "S.W.I.M."? "S.W.I.M." - SOUTHWEST INDIAN MISSION, Inc., is legally a corporation under the laws of the State of New York. It was formed for the purpose of directing and supporting Missions to the Indians of the American Southwest and of furthering certain definite ideals in Indian Missions. Its first and, so far, its only work is St. Christopher's, with headquarters near Bluff, Utah, on the northern edge of the vast Navajo Reservation. In a territory well over twelve hundred square miles in area, being that part of the Reservation which lies within the State of Utah, live a people probably as primitive as any in this country. The Bishop of the Episcopal Church in Utah is our spiritual head, and to him we owe canonical obedience. The Mission is, therefore, a regular part of the work of the Episcopal Church. The definite ideals referred to above are considered by the Directors of S.W.I.M. and by the workers in the field to be of sufficient importance to be protected by every means available. We make no apology for them, and we have no intention of seeing them set aside in the future. In the first place, S.W .I.M. Missions are and will always be uncompromisingly Catholic. Secondly, S.W.I.M. Missions respect native culture. We do not aim to turn Indians into white people, but encourage the preservation of all features of Navajo culture which are not injurious to health or contrary to Christian morality. We have no illusions about current conditions in the Episcopal Church. But as for us and our household, we will serve the Lord by presenting the Doctrine and Discipline "as this Church hath received the same" i.e., as St. Augustine brought it to England in all its fullness and beauty.
