Abstract Most industrial combustion systems utilize burners in which the fuel and combustion air are mixed together in the combustion chamber and burnt in suspension. Such flames are known as turbulent jet diffusion flames, and their characteristics are largely dependent on the fuel/air mixing characteristics of the system and the surrounding environment. The aerodynamics of industrial combustion systems and the very complex physical processes which accompany mixing make mathematical modelling of all but the simplest systems a very difficult problem which is not yet fully understood. Mathematical modelling cannot, therefore be used alone to design practical industrial combustion system. Physical modelling must be resorted to.
