Description Janis Siggard describes the fabulous program that her husband, Derral Siggard, and his colleague, Glen Fifield, built at the new Carbon High School, beginning in 1959. They branded their group The Band with a Heritage and created a Master Musician program with levels and recital awards. They hosted an annual Tournament of Bands at the gym with 300 to 400 students. The Carbon High School Band quickly grew to 80 or 90 students, necessitating two bands. The bands regularly won region and state awards, and featured guest artists and conductors, including nationally famous saxophonist Gallodoro and Gary Amano playing the Tchaikovsky First Piano Concerto. The marching band was especially successful, with around 130 students. Derral and Glen would create the shows by making up a story and then adding music. This marching band received an invitation to the Rose Parade in 1965 and also performed in the Days of '47 Parade, in Chicago, at the Cheyenne Wyoming Rodeo, and the Calgary Stampede. Later, while teaching at Carbon College in the 1970s, Derral started an Auditioned Band Festival, which brought students from the region for a weekend of rehearsing and a public concert, a successful event that he ran for 20 years.
