Pictured at the opening session of the 8th Asian Neuro-Ophthalmology Society (ASNOS) Congress are Satoshi Kashii, President of ASNOS; Akio Tabuchi, Guest of Honor and first President of ASNOS; and meeting organizers Shuhui Wei and Xiaojin Zhang. T he Asian Neuro-Ophthalmology Society (ASNOS) held its 8th Biannual Congress in conjunction with the 4th Chinese Neuro-Ophthalmology Society (CNOS) Conference in October 2015 in Beijing, China. The local hosts and organizers were Shihui Wei and Xiaojun Zhang. The meeting was well attended by Asian neuro-ophthalmologists, general ophthalmologists, and ophthalmologists-in-training. The Congress drew nearly 500 attendees from 9 countries. Of the 171 submitted abstracts, 6 cases were discussed in the Walsh in Asia session, 36 were presented as free articles, and 50 were exhibited as posters. Presentations from invited speakers included 12 given in Chinese and 18 in English. This joint meeting started with the 4th CNOS on a sunny Friday, with more than 300 attendees from all over China. The 1-day Chinese scientific program included 12 invited speeches involving diagnosis and treatment of both afferent and efferent visual pathway disorders, given by ophthalmologists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, otolaryngologists, and e6 radiologists from China. There also were 16 free papers and 14 challenging clinical cases presented. The ASNOS scientific program started early Saturday morning (Fig. 1). The scientific and educational keynote speakers, Nancy Newman and Lanning Kline, lectured on Optic Neuropathy Update and A Roadmap for Publishing in Neuro-ophthalmology, respectively. The other invited lecturers covered neuro-ophthalmic topics from clinical care to basic research and other related fields. These included Gene Therapy of Leber Hereditary Optic Neuropathy: Where We Are and Where We Are Going by Byron Lam; Mechanism of Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma by Ningli Wang; Visual Field Map in the Brain by Satoshi Kashii; Update on Myasthenia Gravis in Taiwan by Chao Wen Lin; and Meningioma of the Visual Pathway by An-Guor Wang. Other lectures included the application of optical coherence tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, and bioengineering techniques in the diagnosis, monitoring, and functional recovery of neuro-ophthalmologic Lam and Zhang: J Neuro-Ophthalmol 2016; 36: e6-e7 Copyright © North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society. Neuro-Ophthalmology News disorders, including the successful use of intraoperative diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) optic radiation navigation for temporal lobe tumor resection. The Walsh in Asia session highlighted challenging conditions such as immunoglobulin G (IgG)4-related ophthalmic disease and extraocular muscle invasion with adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma. These disorders seem to be more common in the Asian population. The success of the first day continued into the second day with additional invited presentations including Update of Diagnosis and Treatment of Optic Neuritis by Gordon Plant and the China Optic Neuritis Study Report by Xiaojun Zhang and Yonghua Hu. The multicenter China Optic Neuritis Study found that nearly one-third of patients with acute optic neuritis had positive serum neuromyelitis optica IgG, which is higher than in Western countries. Of interest, approximately 80%-90% of Leber hereditary optic neuropathy cases in China are associated with the 11778 genotype. Lam and Zhang: J Neuro-Ophthalmol 2016; 36: e6-e7 The Congress ended on a high note with 15 free paper presentations. The Congress was a forum that enhanced education in clinical care and research in China and Asia, where the growth of neuro-ophthalmology is expected in the years to come. The 9th ASNOS Congress will be held in Seoul, Korea in September 2017. Byron L.
