Tele-neuro-ophthalmology is an emerging field that uses telemedicine and digital imaging to expand access to specialized eye care. Smartphone-based tools now enable remote assessment of visual acuity, pupillary responses, visual fields, fundus images, and eyelid function, allowing clinicians to monitor patients outside traditional clinic settings. Studies have shown strong agreement between these smartphone-based tests and standard clinical methods, supporting their reliability for telehealth applications. Key challenges include device variability, lighting conditions, patient compliance, and data security. With standardized protocols, HIPAA-compliant systems, and integration into electronic health records, these technologies can enhance early detection and continuity of care. As artificial intelligence and image analysis tools evolve, smartphone-based tele-neuro-ophthalmology is poised to become a cornerstone of accessible, data-driven vision care. |
