Boyd Udy Oral History Interview

Boyd Udy was interviewed on March 22, 2024, as part of the Crossroads Project for Utah Humanities and Utah Public Radio. He was born in 1947 in Fielding, Utah, and currently lives in Promontory, Utah. He has worked for Thiokol (now Northrop Grumman) since 1970, making him the oldest employee with 54 years of service. Since 1988, he has managed the Thiokol ranch in Promontory, Utah, which provides water to the main plant. The 7,000-acre ranch, where he raised his children, focuses on watershed control through leased cattle grazing. Udy's daily life involves ranching duties and overseeing the water system. He grew up ranching and rodeoing, and continues to be involved with draft horses and cow horses, attributing his successes to his employer and supportive wife. Though the Promontory community has seen a decline in population as children moved away for opportunities, Udy believes the area will remain largely unchanged due to land ownership. He plans to continue working as long as he is able, expressing pride in his long tenure with the company and the values his children learned on the ranch.
