Hard Drive Disposal Guidelines by Craig Bennion New policy being worked up: all electronic media must be properly "sanitized" before being transferred from the current owner/user. Media can be sanitized by overwriting the data or destroying the media. Surplus is helping â€" they have a machine that can destroy a hard drive (Hard Disk Crusher). Disk sanitation software â€" free utility (DBAN). DBAN is a bootable CD. They have a couple of varieties (Windows and Linux). Surplus would probably prefer having the drive separated. DeGaussing is not recommended for hard drives. Shred-it will destroy tapes. (Note: there is progress on the “Craigs List†type of interface for selling used equipment on campus. We will report back soon.)
