Description Dr Charles Gutch was born in Albia, Iowa in 1920. Dr Gutch earned both his B.A  (1941) and M.D. (1943) degrees from the University of Iowa. After service in the in the U.S. Navy during World War II, Dr Gutch return to Iowa  to complete his residency training in anesthesiology in 1947 and internal medicine at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska from 1949-51. Dr Gutch was the Chief of the Dialysis Unit at the VA Hospital in Lincoln, Nebraska through 1967. During his time in Lincoln, Dr Gutch also served as Assistant Professor of Medicine at Creighton University School of Medicine. Dr Gutch was Director of the Chronic Dialysis Center at the University of Colorado Medical Center from 1967 to 1970. Dr Gutch came to the University of Utah in 1970 as the Director of the Hemodialysis Training Center and worked with Dr Willem Kolff at the Institute for Biomedical Engineering and the Division of Artificial Organs. Dr Gutch, along with his colleague Martha Stoner, published the first edition of Review of Hemodialysis for Nurses and Dialysis Personnel. Dr Gutch left the University of Utah in 1972 to serve as the Chief of Dialysis Programs at the University of Arizona from 1972-76. Dr Gutch served as Professor of Medicine at the University of South Dakota and Chief of Medical Service at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Vermillion, SD until his retirement in 1988. Dr Gutch died in 2009.
