They are very de ..irons of having this matter investigated, and if a rule has heretofore been formulated or promulgated that prevents them entirely from the observance of this right, they believe they should have a hearing and be given an opportunity of explaining it. They seem to desire to observe this r***^ in the future, v/ith its modifications and -under regulations. If possible they desire to retain this ceremonial among themselves. I am quite familiar with this Sun Dance, having observed and studied it, and I see nothing in the dance itself that is harmful or injurious in yyj way to the Indians, or that would cause them to shirk a'v work or obligations cf any kind, .and 1 would earnestly recommend thai; a most careful investigation be made oy some representative of your office who will reportco.uui t.ions to you for such action as you may see fit.to take. In my conversations with some of the Indians I note trie re seems to be some friction between them and ths Superintendent in Charge at the Agency at Port Duchesne. Of course, I have no personal knowledge of these grievances cr the causes of them, as I nave concerned oyyelf byt very little with this phase of it. The Indians with whom I have conferred seem suspicious and would like to nave their cause investigated by someone not connected: directly with the Agency or the Indian Department. I am telling |
