Tho Department conours in the views expressed by your office, and the former instructions to the Indian &gent, under whoso supervision the cutting of this timber must be done, should be modified accordingly. In addition it nay be said that in ordor to concervo as far as possible tho timber for the future needs of tho Indians, care should ho taken to permit the cutting end sole thereof only to the oxtent of the needs of individual applicants. The existing rest riotiona against entry by settlors generally on the lands reserved to the Indians for grazing purposes need not bo withdrawn, but permission nay be givon in propor individual cases for the purpose contemplated by the amendment in question. / The matter of kooping acoount of the proceeds of sales of timber might posoibly be simplified by 03tab-i lishing a different scale of prioea whore the timber ic sold on tho stump to be cut by the purchaser, and whore the anlea aro of timber cut personally by tho Indiana. This, however, is matter of detail. Yery respectfully, (Signed) George W, Woodruff. Act ing Secretary, |
