Show April 17, 1923 Hon. Reed Smoot, United States Senate. Dear senator Smoot: Reference is made to your personal call at this Office yesterday in connection with the Paiute Indian situation, at which time you left with us a letter from Mr. Richard H. Lyman, of Salt Lake City, Utah. You are advised that the Department has this day issued instructions to Special Allotting Agent Simington, now at Gallup, New Mexico to proceed to San Juan County, Utah, for the purpose of allotting the Paiute Indians. He will cooperate in this work with Superintendent McKean of the Consolidated Ute Agency. For your information I am inclosing copies of correspondence with Mr. Simington and Superintendent McKean. There is also inclosed herewith the letter of Mr. Lyman, above referred to, a copy thereof having been made for our files, and another copy forwarded to Superintendent McKean. It is believed that the action proposed will result in materially improved conditions among the Paiute Indians in San Juan County, Utah. Sincerely yours, (Signed) E.B. Meritt. Acting Commissioner |
