Sir: Referring to your letter of the 6th instant enclosing a letter and affidavit from Mr. D. C. Nowlin, Game Warden of Wyoming, complaining that the Indians from this Reservation killed deer in Wyoming last August, I will explain fully the presence of Indians in that part of Wyoming at that time. In July ten Sioux came from the Pine Ridge Agency; they stayed here one month and returned in August. I gave one Indian, Charley Mack, a pass to go home with them, hut some of the Indians of this Reservation wenx without a pass. This crowd of Indians were in Wjroming ahout the time this man says he saw Indians. I know Charley Mack to he a truthful man. The Honorahle Commissioner is personally acquainted with him. Charley tells me that no one in the party killed adeer of any kind on the whole trip in going or coming. He says the only fresh meat they had was rahhits and prairie chickens, except in one case where five steers had fallen over a precipice and were killed. They helped the cow-hoys hutcher the dead cattle and they gave them some fresh meat for their work. The Utes do not go to Wyoming to hunt, and this is the first complaint of the kind I ever heard of coming from that State, and as you notice it is five months old.
