Guided by the IHI Framework for Improving Joy in Work (Perlo et al., 2017), this project aimed to improve staff well-being by addressing substantive challenges for team members in achieving appropriate workload and work/life balance. A series of What Matters to You? conversations were conducted with office teams through in person and virtual sticky note exercises, and responses were categorized using the IHI framework's nine components. Responses most often corresponded to Meaning & Purpose and Choice & Autonomy. Frequency and efficacy of meetings were identified as a consistent challenge amongst teams. To respond, we introduced tools and best practices around conducting effective meetings; created a set of common principles to consider when scheduling and holding meetings; and encouraged team members to do frequent deep reviews of meeting schedules to realign with needs and priorities. Baseline and mid-point staff surveys were conducted to measure staff meeting load, individual outlook, and autonomy in scheduling. The surveys, along with informal follow-up conversations, indicated that staff gained tools to improve meeting efficacy and empowerment in managing meeting schedules, resulting in less time spent in meetings per week and improved perceptions of the outcomes of meetings conducted. Teams will review progress again in 6 months and sustainability will be determined based on outcomes. This project demonstrates how targeted interventions rooted in the IHI Framework can improve engagement, balance, and autonomy in work.
