Title Salt Lake City Olympic Legacy Park
Date 2020
Description Nearly two decades ago, tens of thousands of visitors, competitors, and volunteers filled the streets of downtown Salt Lake City in celebration of the 2002 Olympic Winter Games. The 2002 Olympic Games included 2,399 athletes competing in 78 different events.Coming just months after the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York, the games took on a specific significance, especially for American Olympians and fans. One of the most emotional moments of the Games took place during the Opening Ceremonies, when members of the US Olympic Team carried in the United States flag that was recovered from the wreckage of The World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. Many Americans have come to see the 2002 Olympics as a form of rebirth for a country haunted by the attacks, and a world left reeling from its devastation.
