Description The role of systemic steroids in the treatment of herpes zoster (HZ) ophthalmoplegia is controversial. We present a case of HZ ophthalmoplegia with close follow-up examination during extended treatment course with oral prednisone taper and valacyclovir.We then provide a meta-analysis on published cases of HZ ophthalmoplegia, reviewing outcomes with systemic antiviral and steroidtherapy.
