Description The etiology of GCA is unknown. Autoimmune, infectious, and genetic etiologies have been proposed. Population studies around the globe have demonstrated a significant variability in the incidence of GCA. This variability suggests a genetic component to disease susceptibility. However, conjugal cases suggest environmental factors may also be important.
