Definition -monocular transient visual loss, usually with complete resolution. Historical aspects. Fisher in 1952 described transient monocular blindness in association with contralateral hemiplegia and attributed these findings to occlusion of the cervical portion of the internal carotid artery. He later observed the passage of whitish material through the retinal arterials in a patient with amaurosis fugax. 2 Hollenhorst in 1961 reported that plaques were frequently present in the retinal arterioles of patients with carotid artery disease. |
