Myself snd iome of my employ68 visited-him,and administered such rhsdies ss we could, but without avail, and we were compelled to witness his eroruciating auffe~ing, and the anguish of hie relatins and friends, without the ability to relieve the one or toadminister eou-salstion to the others. This is by no means an unimporht $&tuture in the service undermy charge. 0, how I long st suoh times far knowledge and ekill to help, and for all the resources of their as well as of my own language, that I might be able to point them to the only source of aid snd comfort in suoh eolorgeociee! It would seem from the repo~.ted number of births and deaths, for the last two years at least, that our number is on the increase, and yet from the same report our aggregate num-ber i8 less than ever before. This apparent contradiction I sm unable to explain, except it be upon the hypothesis that we are gradually arriviog st B more aooornte count in the ag-gregate, end fail in this respect as to births and deaths, whioh I a& inclined to think is the fact ; for the eonvietion has farced itself upon my mind that our Indians are decreasing, and must, unless some decided interposition on their behalf, in s generation or so pass away ns a band or tribe. Without doubt their partial c.haoge of habits and customs s i l l have this tendency, withont a more thorough ehhnp and complete adoption of civilized habits and pursuits. In my opinion the transition state will always be attended by a decrease in num-h" a*,.-" . MISSIONS AND BCHOOLS. No mission, properly so calle'd, has ever been established in this agency. In all religious and henevelent as well sa seoulsr undertakings, means and efforts are brought into requisi-tion where it is thought they will produce the beet results. This has, I presume, not been deemed as promising afield as otbers, hence the failure. I do not quite adopt this view, thon h I cannot obsnge it. I am strongly inclined to the opinion, though our sgenoy is smslf that the devoted efforts of one missionary, male or female, would i n s series of ears pmdooe ss beneficent resulls as the same amount of labor among any other Indian tri8e. Our ~ohoohl as been suspended for nearly a year and a halffor the want of funds, and sleo because it was thought the results did not justify the expense. Muoh good manifestly re-sulted from it while in operation, but certainly not as much as we had hoped for or desired, nor as much comparatively ss there would have been ssoored had we been sble to continue it, and I fear that muoh of the ground gsioed hss been lost through the wsnt of continued oultivstian. The best results, in my Opinion, can only be scoured with soy Indian tribe, but especially with oar8, by the permanent establishment of s manual-labor bosrding-school .for both sexes, where the pupils can be kept separated from the body of the tribe most of the tima, and Lmght habits of cleanliness, p~oprietyo f omduct among themselves, and esoeciallv amone the sexes. snd industrial hebit..
