This project examines the long-term feasibility of financing and operating an Olympic scale ski jump facility in the state of Utah. The idea for this project began with the announcement by various local authorities that Salt Lake City would actively pursue the United States bid to host the International Winter Olympic Games. For the first time ever, the United States Olympic Committee, the governing body that selects which U.S. city will make a bid to the International Olympic Committee to host the Winter games, will require that the city which wins the U.S. bid must begin construction of all Olympic venues within one year after accepting the bid. This requirement thus necessitates that Salt Lake City quickly develop plans outlining the methods of financing facilities such as a ski jump stadium. The text includes a brief history of the Utah Olympic movement, diagrams of the basic design and layout of a ski Jump and associated facilities, a discussion of the financial implications of the selection of the jump site, cost estimates for the construction of an Olympic caliber ski jump complex, a review of possible initial funding strategies and individual evaluations of numerous different revenue opportunities unique to a ski jump stadium. Thus the purpose of this project is to identify and evaluate a number of key issues pertaining to the planning and finance of a ski jump stadium and complex. |
