M. <br><br> NINTH YEAR OPENED SEPT., 3, 1883. <br> The Salt Lake Collegiate Institute entered upon its ninth year with brighter prospects than ever before. <br> CHARACTER OF THE SCHOOL. <br> The School is graded into Primary, Intermediate, Academic and Collegiate departments. Each department is under an experienced teacher of known ability and the large enrolment of last year, (240) shows that the School merits the confidence of the public. <br> HIGHER EDUCATION. <br> Through the liberality of friends in the East a regular College Department is organized. This department is in the charge of a thoroughly competent gentleman, who is principal of the School, aided by a lady as associate principal. The course of instruction in the Collegiate Department is three-fold, Normal, Scientific and Classical. <br> ACCOMODATIONS. <br> The School has a seating capacity for 225 day pupils, and the Boarding Department can accommodate, besides teachers, some 25 pupils. <br> SCHOOL YEAR. <br> The School is composed of 40 weeks, including two weeks of vacation, one at the holidays and the other in the spring, at the close of the third quarter. <br> BOARDING DEPARTMENT. <br> This department is under the control of an experienced matron. The girls are under the direct supervision of the matron and the lady teachers. The boys occupy a separate hall, and are under the direct supervision of the gentleman principal. The Superintendent has a general oversight of this Department, as well as of the Day School. <br> RATES OF TUITION, BOARD, &c. <br> Primary Tuition, per quarter…$ 5.00 <br> Intermediate…6.00 <br> Academic…8.00 <br> Collegiate…10.00 <br> Piano, organ or guitar…15.00 <br> Board including furnished rooms, fuel and light, $5 per week; washing, 50 cents per week. <br> No deduction made on tuition for the first two weeks of any quarter, and no pupil received for less than one quarter. <br> No deduction made for absence unless over three weeks on account of sickness. Any pupil withdrawing from School without informing the Superintendent will be charged to the end of the quarter. <br> No student will be received from another school who is known to be in arrears in that school for tuition, or is under discipline. <br><br> A MILLIONAIRE WANTED. <br> If you had a column of wants I could give you an advertisement; as it is, I will give you an idea of what it would be. I know of a capital opportunity for a paying investment on a large scale, and I want to be put in communication with some millionaire, who would be glad to know where he could put some of his money to good advantage, or as the politicians say, "Where it would do the most good." I suppose there are plenty of millionaires to be found, but I want to find a wise one; a man who knows that the only way to enjoy life is to do what he can to promote the happiness of his fellow-men. A wise man will aim to get the most good out of his money while he lives, knowing well he cannot carry it with him into eternity. One of the great French preachers, Massilon Bossuet or Bourdaloue, said in a funeral discourse of a liberal rich man, "He exported his fortune to Heaven before him in charity, and has now gone there to enjoy it." This was a wise movement no doubt; but my proposition is to invest so as to produce present* enjoyment with no hindrance to future comfort. I do not know by experience, but my knowledge of human nature leads me to believe that the possession of great wealth is not conducive to enjoyment; great anxiety must be felt lest it be lost while we live, or that it may prove hurtful to those who inherit it, if indeed it be not largely dissipated by those who contend for it when we leave it. It is so easy in our day for cunning selfishness to defeat our wishes as to the disposition of property as expressed in our wills, that the only safe way for us, is to see in our own life time that our patriotic and benevolent plans are carried out. If he has been honorable and fair in acquiring his wealth, he has found pleasure in the employment it has given; why should he debar himself the enjoyment of using it wisely, and how can he do this? You know EARNEST WORKER what I want to find. It is the man who has by his own skill and industry accumulated a million of dollars, and is desiring to use it wisely. Tell such a one if you find him, to use one-fourth of his fortune in establishing a college in Salt Lake City, and why? I shall not occupy my time or your columns in discussing the question now so clearly before the minds of our countrymen, ‘‘What is to become of our free Government if the ignorance and vice so extensively prevailing and increasing are not speedily enlightened and repressed;" but shall only give answer to the inquiry, why build a college here? And, 1st. Because we must have teachers educated on the spot. The East cannot supply the demand, and we cannot educate our children in Eastern Institution ons [sic] account of the expense. <br> 2d. Salt Lake is the center of a vast mountain region whose mineral wealth alone will attract millions of our countrymen as well as foreigners, whose children will in the next generations (if their mental and moral training is neglected) prove that, our experiment of self-government is a failure and anarchy or despotism will result. <br><br><br> * words are italicized <br><br>
