Show # 14, P 2 A highlight of the Summer was the visit of Fr Hultgren of Trinity Church in Alhambra, California with a youth group and c haperones, who undertook to restain the clapboard walls of our house and of some of the smaller buildings. Never underestimate the heat of desert sun 1 " 'l'he thirstiest house on earth" was Father's comment. Twenty gallons of stain the house drankl Perhaps what made us most happy about the whole thing was t he joyous acceptance of these strangers by the local Navajo youth and adults. It was a joy to have with us for a half-year Catherine Pickett, whose praise is in "Boil My Heart". She shared our life and our work, living in her own trailer; but has now gone on to Salt Lake city, to pastures new and a new job. And now: BROTHER JUNIPER'S Tuppnyworth. 'rHE LINES below were written before I took off for a trip to Wisconsin to visit my brother and his lovely wife, and to give slide-talks and no-slide talks in many places. I am now back and rested, ready for more work. Many thanks to all who have sent in Betty Crocker coupons. We now have well over one-third of the amount ,needed to get the mobile radio-tele-phone which will enable us to communi- Catechumen and (her son) COlMllllicant cate w"ith staff members on the road. Our rough roads are hard on cars, and this rapio could make the difference between sitting in a car all night and getting help. What Episcopal Church service is complete without coffee-hour? We can get an urn if our friends in the Western part of the USA will help; it is only here that MJB coffee is sold, and all we need is the metal lids of the cans, labels from the instant and tops of the MJB tea-bag boxes. (Free ad for MJBI) Now for construction: Helen reported that as she was driving hom from the P.O. the wind was whipping up white-cap waves on top of the water-tank half way up the cliff. I climbed up and found that the wooden lid of the tank had disintegrated and. its parts lying at bottom of the tankl A call f'Jr help to "Woody" ~ . and Sandra Re1ff of Flagstaff brought not only the mater1als, but a new lid, pre-fabricated and all but ready to slide into place. What would we do without our dear friendsl Al'\JD HELEN ADDS I There are great compensations for being "an old missionary" or having been first schOOl teacher to many nOlo[ grown-up Navajos 1 Many friend~ come and tell with joyous gratitude about the early days at st Christopher's. One lad who ~ had learned the rudiments of the faith when in the two-grade Navajo Mountain School came to us here, and after hours of serious talk said "Oh yes, I read your book :i3oil t!Y Heart .E2!: Me when I was in Vietnam. A ~ecent highlight was the beautiful church wedding at st Christopher's of one of our first school boys to an Arapaho girl. The church was well filled and the event was a great witness' to "how it ought to be done". I recalled that when the bridegroom was very small, I asked him why the Israelits on their way back from Egypt stopped at Mount Sinai. Recalling his many experiences· in desert travel by car he sighed and said "Oh I suppose the car broke down and they had to ' get repairs I " The lad is nOlo[ well on tmlards his study of medicine and hopes to help his People in capacity of a physician. He needs your prayers tor perseverance. "Billy" we called him, but his name is Arnold. |
