Report of the Commissioner of Indian Affairs Accompanying the Annual Report of the Secretary of the Interior for the Year 1856

Commissioner of Indian Affairs George Manypenny reports that the Indians of Utah have been peaceable and have demonstrated an aptitude for farming. The Commissioner claims that Agent Hurt has been entering into agreements with the Indians and has implemented systems of farming without express permission from the government (pg 16). The Commissioner describes conditions on a variety of other reservations. The Utah Superintendent of Indian Affairs Brigham Young submits his quarterly report; he reports that the Indians under his agency have continued farming and maintained peaceful relations with each other and with white settlers. Young inquires about undistributed tribal appropriations (p. 30-33).
