Neutralization Trailer The solids incineration module consists of a trailer mounted rotary kiln, solids preparation and charging equipment, a burner, an air blower, and a solid discharge system. The rotary kiln is designed for an overall thermal loading of 15 x 10 BTU/hr. The charging system is comprised of a belt conveyor and a charging hopper with integral ram feeder. A shredder is also included when PCB capacitors or other shredded solids are to be incinerated. Contaminated solids are placed on the belt conveyor and fed onto a feed hopper. An intermittently operated ram feed mechanism located in the feed chute pushes the material into the kiln. The contaminated liquids are sprayed directly on the solids in the kiln. The rotary kiln is a brick lined, carbon steel pipe mounted horizontally on a trailer and is rotated by a trunnion drive mechanism. A nominal solids residence time of 1 hour and rotation of 2 rpm insure complete mixing and detoxification of the solids. A co-current flow of solids and gases in the kiln was chosen because this process mode is the most versatile for the detoxification and incineration of most of the waste mateials encountered. The solids at 1800 DEG.F are discharged into the kiln end breeching where they fall into an ash/solids to a storage bin where they are cooled and sampled for potential contaminates before being sent to a landfill. |
