Flooding in Naples

Update Item Information
Title Flooding in Naples
Identifier VE0699
Subject Flooding--Naples, Utah; Equipment--Backhoe; Men
Spatial Coverage Vernal (Utah)
Description Heavy rains caused the snow to melt in fields above Highway 40. A culvert under Highway 40 was iced up and this caused the flooding. Water backed up around seven feet deep and ran north in front of the trading post. Water ran down the borrowpit and flooded the Dewey Atwood home just below the Naples Store. The Atwood family and neighbors tried to keep the water from entering the home but was unable to prevent water damage to carpets and heating units. The water on Highway 40 froze during the night and the Uintah County snow plows had to scrape up the ice.
