Altruism is not genetically transmitted, and those who unselfishly help others are not often found in any society. The names of Jesus Christ, Sister Teresa, Martin Luther King are important names known by us all partly because of what they did, and partly because of the fact that they represent such a small group of people - those people who helped others for no personal gain. Today the spirit of volunteerism and the rise of the charitable foundation and, most importantly, the fact that the federal government has stopped charitable acts, has given birth to a new spirit of altruism that is being demonstrated world-wide. This new spirit produces skepticism however, in that many of the charitable acts seem to produce parograms that do "well" by doing "good". This paper will explore the black side of programs that operate for themselves rather than to help others. |
