Title Human rights and European integration
Date 1993-08

Description This paper deals with the role of human rights in European integration. "Human rights" is defined as those rights usually considered to be fundamental, as well as "other rights." This includes laws prohibiting discrimination, slavery, and genocide as well as social and economic rights. Human rights, integration, and sovereignty affect each other. The protection of human rights will promote the process of integration. Sovereignty is determined to be of less importance than human rights. It should not be given up entirely, but sacrifices ned to be made to guarantee human rights and to further integration. The existing institutions in Europe which deal with human rights are discussed, specifically the European Convention on Human Rights and the Court of Justice of the European Communities. I conclude that by overhauling existing organizations and ratifying current declarations a decisive guarantee of human rights for Europe could b established which would promote a European integration.
