Show in different places for children aged from eight to thirteen gathered from the flooded villages. They are being housed, fed, clothed, and given a simple education, both scholastic and religious. The local committee were happy to find tbat on 50^ (U.S.A.) per child per month, they could provide two good, hearty meals a day of millet, soya beans, sweet potatoes, salted carrots, and peanuts. The Hospital has had its share in this relief project, for the kiddies had impetigo, scabies, and other minor illnesses, and our outpatient department attendance is largely made up of these refugee children. We are hoping we can prevent the usual spring epidemics of measles, scarlet fever and diphtheria from breaking out among these two thousand children. We pray especially it won't be diphtheria, with antitoxin costing $30.00 (mex.) a dose! War and flood have left the people no money to pay for medical care, so the patients on our free list have about trebled. Last year's report mentioned the high cost of drugs, cloth, coal, hospital supplies of all kinds; this year Chinese currency has dropped still lower, so costs have risen proportionately, and we are - 10 - |
