Show leaving only a Viennese refugee doctor, who had no Chinese language at all, to cope with the ninety or so patients in their wards. So Dr. Chang has carried on alone for more than half a year, except for Dr. Cooke's help for the month of August, and ten days in December. He has carried the heavy responsibilities well and is making a place for himself in the Christian Community, for his popularity is growing. His wife who is a trained kindergartener has started a small kindergarten for the children of the Staff and the Compound, and is endearing herself to all with her wholesome, sympathetic, efficient and kindly spirit. From February, when the Japanese arrived, until nearly summer, there were four hundred women and children, neighbors from the City, living in the Compound or sleeping there at night because of the unsettled condition and the undisciplined conduct of soldiers. Our two evangelists, Mr. Chu Ch'ang-Tao and Miss Chao Chu-Lan, in addition to their work in the Hospital, spent much time with these refugees, talking personally with them and holding classes.
