Topics include: The appearance of her first 4-room schoolhouse; Games she played at recess; How each of the rooms was heated with a coal stove; The death of her father when she was a toddler; Helping with her mother's school janitor work; Wearing long stockings; Walking a mile each direction to get to and from school until 5th grade; Riding the bus to middle school and high school; Having two grades in each classroom; Studying reading, writing, and arithmetic; Her mother's help with spelling; Not having school lunch available until fifth or sixth grade; Bringing lunch from home; Friends at school; Being a champion "chinner" (pull-ups); and names of teachers.
